Today, Friday, October 5, Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare, is being released at select theaters in cities all over the country, including Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Boston, Nashville, and others. The film originally premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, and is being touted as the “definitive film on American Healthcare.” The film explores a question that is one of the most controversial and problematic of our time, “what can be done to save our broken medical system?” The filmmakers are friends and past collaborators with some of our amazing DB Productions team, and are excited to congratulate them on the tremendous acclaim they have received for their efforts. Directed and produced by Matthew Heineman and Susan Froemke, an Emmy-winning, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker. The duo previously collaborated on the Emmy-nominated HBO series, The Alzheimer’s Project.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is supporting the film’s message and efforts as part of their social impact campaign. Experts in the film are quoted as deeming the American Healthcare system as a “disease management” system, which is precisely the issue this film is tackling. Social impact films such as this are what allows for messages of political, societal, or cultural nature be explored in an authentic and visual way.
“The film examines the powerful forces trying to maintain the status quo in a medical industry designed for quick fixes rather than prevention, for profit-driven care rather than patient-driven care.” With healthcare at such a critical transition point, this film brings to light an issue that is increasingly becoming an urgent and immediate concern in the first part of the 21st century. “My job is to generate discussion,” says Heineman. “I want to move people to think and ponder the question of their own healthcare. And it doesn’t need to be political thinking.” The film aims to humanize the face of healthcare by telling the stories of individual Americans, in hopes of starting a revolution for the medical industry.
Escape Fire has received a series of accolades, and has been recognized by the Sundance Film Festival, the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, Silverdocs, and the Newport Beach Film Festival, among others.
